Body Dysmorphia & Body Dysmorphic Disorder

It's often true that we're our own worst critics. When we spend all of our time within our own bodies, it's possible to experience a disconnection. Focusing on what we perceive as flaws can become a core perception, leading to decreases in quality of life.

Common symptoms that may indicate body dysmorphia include:

  • Excessive focus on minor and/or perceived flaws

  • Constantly attempting to improve appearance through excessive exercise, plastic surgery or other methods.

  • Avoiding mirrors or excessive body checking

  • Constantly asking others around you if you look okay

  • Not believing compliments or reassurance about your appearance

Options for Treatment

There are multiple treatment options that have been researched to have significant improvements in symptoms for individuals dealing with Body Dysmorphic Disorder and associated symptoms, including therapy and/or medications. Some find the combination of working with both a therapist and medical provider/psychiatrist beneficial to managing symptoms.

In my practice, I incorporate a mixed-method approach with a primary focus on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This means we'll explore how you identify perceived flaws, how you interpret immediate thoughts about yourself, and gently challenge your current perception. During this process, we'll practice grounding and mindfulness exercises to help you connect with your body. I place importance on incorporating educational tools- that way when you're ready for our time together to finish, you have the tools needed to manage reoccurrences of symptoms in the future.
